GUYS I CAN'T EVEN

so right this is the 1996 tv adaptation i watched when i was eight
and like [personal profile] oliphaunts says, it is my One True Adaptation
guys i adore Dicky Cheung so much
he had ALL THE MANNERISMS DOWN PAT
the sideways lean and the scamper and the head tilt and the 'yo!'
and the motherfucking KUNGFU STUNTS and the cudgel-twirling
so it's really no surprise that i spent like, 70% of my time trying to be him when i was eight
(sidenote: i was the most annoying eight year old ever)
omg, that theme song is like pavlovian to me at this point
it kickstarts all these ~nostalgic associations~ i didn't even know were there

Added to which, it is actually a really good adaptation? Um. I've been watching the first couple of episodes and it is even more on crack than I thought - the terrible computer graphics make it actually - but omg, the artistic choices! I'm on the fifth episode and the main storyline hasn't even started yet, instead they go deep into Monkey's origin story and omg, baby Wukong going to Taoist magic school. Oh my god and okay, I always knew that I thought of Monkey as the Biggest Woobie because when they're on their journey Xuanzang keeps sending him away, for no good reason! That look on his face when Xuanzang sends him away yet again! (It's all good, Xuanzang usually ends up getting captured by a demon and Monkey always has to be sent for yet again to save everyone's asses. To which I have to say, I don't understand when people's favourites are not Monkey and also this story is 100% accurate.) I hadn't realised though how much this was, uh, not exclusively in my own head but an opinion thankfully shared by the creators of this series. BABY WUKONG! Blah blah blah, feelings about how this adaptation says a lot about vulnerability in a society fundamentally premised on order and origin, which SEEMS to be valued as being a means to morality but is really as much about self-interest as anything else. AND ALSO ANARCHIC FOLK CONSCIOUSNESS

... I thought I had a lot to say but apparently not, um. If I had more time & was conscientious enough I would totally do the whole screenshot + summary thing, because this show is AMAZING. I love that it doesn't take itself too seriously, and I love all the choices it makes with its life. In conclusion THIS STORY IS THE BEST STORY. The end.
