Dear Yuletide Author,
I AM SO SORRY THIS LETTER HAS BEEN SO LONG IN THE MAKING… but here it is, now! Some things I like in stories, generally: good, tense, sharp dialogue. I am an absolute sucker for dialogue, mostly because I find it so hard to write usually. Good characterization -- I'm the sort of person who cares enough to watch lots of video until I can get people's voices down right? Melodramatic imagery, occasionally. Lolzy gen. I like gen a lot! Is that strange? This all sounds pretty general… and I am really sorry! I have a delicious you can check out here, if you'd like to check out fics I liked (a lot of bandom and figure skating), and sort of discern what my general ~style is. Because it is hard for me to articulate.
Fandoms!
Figure skating RPF: Irina Slutskaya, Stephane Lambiel, Mirai Nagasu, Meryl Davis
I am not sure if I'm doing this right, but the thing is: you can choose whatever characters you want to write about for this fandom really! I chose four of my favorites, because four is the limit. I didn't include Johnny Weir, whom I obviously love as well because I think his presence in most skating fics is a given, really. I wanted to ask for something different! (Although if you wrote me Johnny/Stephane, that would be amazing because ♥OTP♥) I would love a fic about Irina especially, because stories about her seem to be really thin on the ground, and did you know that she's amazing? Seriously! I love her. I love her skating, I love her smile, and I love her friendship with Johnny Weir. I would be delighted to read ANY story you wrote for me (seriously, so -- feel free to ignore this letter!) but I would die happy if you wrote a story about Irina for me.
I also love Mirai and Meryl. You could write me a story about any of the four characters interacting with each other, or you could write about them in conjunction with other skaters! It's completely cool, really. I don't really like Evan Lysacek, but anything else is fair game, so.
Velvet Goldmine
Here's the thing: I watched the movie only last year and I was CONSUMED with this desire to read more fic about Mandy immediately and was… inevitably disappointed. So! This is my opportunity to jones for fic about Mandy! She fascinates me: the movie is something of a Gestalt duck-rabbit entity for me really: it's so naff and falls down on characterization a whole lot, but it does leave some intriguing gaps. Tell me about Mandy and how she transformed from loud campy rockstar wife to jaded, embittered woman of the dystopia! Tell me about the conversations she's had with Curt and Brian and Arthur! If you wanted to write me some Arthur/Mandy I would not say no, because I think the older woman/relatively young ingenue dynamic is hot like burning, and could be written plausibly even though I know one of the main points of the movie is, um, about Arthur's queerness.
Or you could tell me about Mandy's queerness. >:)
Football RPF
Tell me the tragic love story between Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka I have been led to believe exists, please! I am… sort of in footballer fandom? Like, once RL quietens down I am probably going to read more in it, so I am pretty patchy on characterization and such at the moment but LOL RONALDO, he is such a douche and I love him, and I would absolutely love a gen story about him as well, please! Here's another thing I really like: long, character-driven, canon-compliant stories with bonus emotional realism from authors who know their characters inside-out. If you are one of those people, hi-five! If you are not, you could always just write me lolzy gen. I'm pretty easy.
… which brings me to Cesc Fabregas. I LOVE HOW RIDICULOUS HE IS, so if you wanted to write me lolzy gen about him actually having a superpower (um) or generally, him being put in bizarre situations and being really bemused by that I'd be absolutely delighted! Orrr, you could write me Cesc/Iker Casillas, because I have a huge thing about age differences and I'd love to see that tackled in fic, but preferably not in a very angsty and/or creepily manipulative way, please.
Community: Abed, Troy, Annie, Shirley
I love this fucking show. I love it so much I can enjoy it in a vacuum, so I guess this isn't really a proper request in the sense that what I really want from fic is more of the show, in written form. Um, sorry? /o\ Here is what I love, though: the Troy & Abed friendship, and Annie's character in general. I don't like Jeff as much, so if you were writing Jeff/Britta or Jeff/anyone you might have to work a little harder to sell me on it, simply because he gets so much screen time already. I do like him as a sounding board for other characters, though, I'm just not so interested in Jeff in himself.
I really like that the show's genuinely strong on ensemble, in the sense that every episode (every episode I've caught up with so far, anyway) furthers the relationship between two people in the gang in some way, instead of just concentrating on a few core characters within the clique itself, if that makes sense? So: you can write me anything and it'll be great! Troy and Shirley! Annie and Abed! Jeff and (haha) Chang! Go wild with the permutations! And -- I think this applies as a general rule -- despite my avowed love for lolzy gen, PLEASE DO NOT FEEL PRESSURED to write it if like me you're congenitally incapable of being funny, or at least you feel this way. I like serious fic too, even if Community isn't very serious in itself. My favourite Community fic is this so it should give you a general idea, I guess.
I am really, really sorry this letter was so long (in terms of wordcount, but I suppose it was long in the making too, I guess -- I hope you haven't given up on refreshing this entry!). But you could definitely just ignore all this and write me the story YOU want to write, and I think I'd enjoy it just as much, if not more! I really hope you have a lot of fun working out the story you want to write, because Yuletide = fun and joy. And: thank you.
