I am imagining them calling up Jesse and Jesse being like, great, the married couple calls up their old maid friend, and trying not to be bitter or nasty about it. He's just. They're such attractive people.

"I miss you," Andrew says into the phone stupidly, and Emma takes over.

"Jesse? Come visit us."

"Maybe some day," Jesse promises, but he has no intention of doing so. He doesn't think he'd like California. Down here, in New York, everyone is pasty and scrawny. They ignore him when he rides his bike places, his baseball cap pulled low. Past the fruit stands and bodegas, past the Columbian bakeries and burrito stands and Filipino restaurants - he rides into the main road and pedals as fast as he can amidst the cars just so he doesn't lose his life.

(L.A. is three hours behind New York and he knows that like he knows his pulse - but he tries to pretend he hasn't been keeping track.)

He doesn't call much, but he tries to pretend what he'd hear on the other end if he did and they picked up. Would he be interrupting them on quiet nights in? Would Andrew pick up for Emma? Vice versa?

He tries not to admit it, but they were his best friends. Despite his cats, who were his original best friends, now he's kind of lonely.
