Idk, I get the idea that this season is consciously reworking a lot of the tropes we've seen so far in the show -- useless boyfriend turns out to be pretty awesome, and older villainous woman is morally ambiguous and shit! I mean, I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's hell of a lot more interesting than it used to be.
