Yes, me too! Just, ugh. It was something I was thinking about on and off, briefly - and well. When I try to write something that is not fanfic, I always feel incredibly awkward because I can't seem to set in in my own country and make it as real as I'd like it to.
MCR traipsing through Nairobi would be great, actually - you should write it! But yeah, I do get the same problem: once I tried writing a Ryan-and-Spencer travel around the world together fic, and they stopped in Singapore, but that bit was pretty peripheral, and it was like, oh hey! Singapore made a guest appearance! Guess I've done my bit then! [/sarcasm]
... yeah. Also, my country in general still grapples with questions of cultural identity, being an immigrant nation, so the colonial/Western question is pretty pertinent.
